2020 Vision- A Look Into the New Year

Strive to be a better shooter-
We know by looking at self-defense incidents that happen around the country that we need to be able to put the first shot on target from a holster in a concealed carry position in less than 2 seconds. This takes some training! The distance that these events happen at varies but in the majority of the cases we see they happen at one car length or less. This means that the training distance we use most should be less than 15'.
Understand your gun better-
Get familiar with your gun. People worry more about having the right gun than they do learning to be the best with what they have. You need to know how to load and unload it efficiently and be able to handle it safely in all aspects. Do you know how to handle a malfunction? Do you know how to load and unload properly under stress? Do you have a safety? Are you using it?
Draw from the holster-
Have you had a training session on the proper draw from the holster techniques? Are you using a proper holster? If not you may be presenting your gun unsafely or wasting time and efforts without using economies of motion and proper form. No one ever won a gunfight by holstering fast!
Favorite training drill-
Do you have a drill that's not to easy to accomplish and yet you can shoot it with a reasonable amount of ammo? Doing a drill that you can accomplish easily helps your ego but does not help you grow as a shooter. Try the drill published below, and then progress by adding a timer and or distance.

Certified Instructor for USCCA

Last month I attended a 2-day USCCA's Instructor Certification program and I learned a lot of new training concepts that I will be bringing forward into the new year. I have been an affiliate instructor with the USCCA for a number of years, and now I will be bringing their curriculum full tilt into my training program. The training program is fresh with new concepts and great ideas. Their self-defense protection coverage (which is part of their membership) is, in my opinion, the best option available for most individuals who might need protection from the legal system after using self-defense to defend themselves or their families. I will be bringing more information out on the self-defense protection during the year. Including a seminar that you will all be able to attend.

USCCA History

In 2003, Tonnie Schmidt and Tim Schmidt founded Delta Defense and the United States Concealed Carry Association (USCCA) and began publishing a self-defense magazine that focused on responsible firearms ownership. This magazine grew into a national association providing self-defense education, training, and legal protection to its members.

The U.S. Concealed Carry Association (USCCA) provides self-defense education, training, and legal protection, for responsible American gun owners. The USCCA is the largest and fastest-growing association whose sole focus is the responsibly armed American and is headquartered in West Bend, WI.

The USCCA has more than 300,000 members and 2 million newsletter subscribers. Delta Defense employs over 240 people in 12 states and was named to the Inc. 5000 list of America’s fastest-growing private companies in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018

Student Download Page

In class, we talk about the resources of the password-protected downloads page that I have provided my students. I have been working on a new look and new resources for the page. I have been trying to make the information more accessible with categories and organization so it is easier to find what you are looking for. This information is available to my students and not the general public. Great information is available on the legal aspects of concealed carry, training issues, as well as some new information on self-protection coverage and more.

four 4 inch circles

This Months Drill

This looks and sounds easy but don't be fooled....
This drill is 5 shots/5 hits into a 4-inch circle at 10 feet. It must be done 4 times to qualify at the first (Red) Level. The tries do not have to be consecutive. Additional qualifications at 15 feet (White Level) and 20 feet (Blue Level) are available for those who pass the Red Level. There is no time limit. This is deceptively simple but many people who think they can shoot to this standard cannot.
Here is a target that you can download to try it out for yourself. It’s printable on standard printer paper with 4-inch circles.
I like to use my laser measure tool to gauge my distance. Many ranges do not have the distances marked that I want to shoot. You can progress through the colors (distances) or you can add some time factors (shot timer) to make it harder to accomplish. I like to change the order I shoot the circles in. Timers are an invaluable training tool and you should learn to add one to your training regimen.

Pepper Spray Training

OC/Pepper Spray is legal everywhere in Colorado. It is one of the best ways we have to defend property in this state. It also serves as a complement defensive tool for anyone that carries a handgun for self-defense. Remember if all you carry is a gun the legal system can say that you intend to use a gun as a solution for everything. Statistics indicate that most self-defense encounters would not qualify for use of a gun (your life is not in danger). I have developed a booklet for the use of OC/Pepper Spray. Feel free to read it and discuss it with your family. Contact me direct for the best OC/Pepper Spray at wholesale prices.

Shooting at the Range

Heading into the winter months, remember that some events that happen at the range take priority. So be sure to check the events at Pueblo Municipal Shooters. When you park in the lot remember not to leave anything of value visible in your vehicle. Especially guns and gun cases. Also, be sure you are only firing guns that are authorized by the range rules. If you have any questions be sure to ask me about your firearms. In addition, always wear a hat for protection from flying brass and this time of year be sure to wear some warm clothes. The range can be cold at times.
