Should You Use Your Gun

A police officer with 15 years on the job as a swat officer, firearms instructor, and skilled shooter takes his family to McDonald's. He’s an off-duty police officer so he has his
concealed carry weapon on him. He has his four-year-old daughter and his wife with him as they go to the counter to order the people at the counter are talking about someone robbing the store in the back. He never saw the robber come in and he assumed they came in the back and that they would leave that way so he told his wife to take their daughter to the car and told the people around him to clear the
area and he grabs his pistol from concealment.

As soon as he pulls it out the robber comes barreling out of the back sees the gun in the off-duty police officer’s hand and started firing at him. The officer shoots 11 times hitting the gunman 10 times (pretty good shooting).

He checked his area after the gunman goes down scanning left then scanned right 360 degrees. These guys usually travel in packs and as he scans the area, he sees a 9-year-old girl on his left with a bullet in her head lying on the floor in a pool of blood and he knows she's dead. He looks the other direction and sees his wife and daughter hiding under a table huddling together they never made it out of the restaurant.

He said if he had it to do all over again, he would have escorted his wife and daughter to the car. Been a good witness called 911 and waited for the police to arrive. When rounds are being fired, the gunman doesn't care where the rounds go or who they hit. There is always a better than zero percent chance that someone will be shot in a gunfight. There's always danger in a gunfight that you or someone else will be shot or killed.

Guns In Cars

We have guns with us much of the day and sometimes that means having to leave it in the car when we go to a non-permissive place. We are still seeing a lot of guns stolen from cars in our area. People are leaving guns in autos and are losing them to thieves. The most popular places to keep your guns according to the police reports we have seen are Under the Seat - The Glove Box- and The Center Console. These locations in your car are not safe. Remember to lock your guns in your car safe when you leave your gun in your car. I have safes available that are inexpensive and easy to use with most guns. These safes simply attach to the frame of the seat and are easy to install and use. Let me know if I can help you keep your firearm secure.

Home Defense Shotgun

Many people have contacted me about some basic training for their home defense shotgun. I will be having these mini-course events on shotguns and how to use them for people that are using them in the home for self-defense. We will look at accessories, ammo, and safe gun handling techniques as well as a few laws that may be helpful. Learn what your shotgun is capable of. I will have this mini-course available on your schedule and it will last a couple of hours. Let me know your schedule and I will set a date and time for you. This mini-class will be available for a small fee of $45.

Free Gun Cleaning Class FGCC

Last month some of you missed this training so I am going to do it again in October.

You should all understand that there are many ways to clean your handgun and they are probably all better than not doing it at all. I am teaching the way I have always done it. The idea is to get all the leftover grunge from the firing cycle out of your gun and to lubricate it so that it runs properly and does not malfunction on you when you need it the most. Many of the modern handguns that we own could probably be fired literally hundreds of times with no cleaning and probably never hiccup even once.
But do we want to take that chance? I personally do not like to carry a fired gun for self-defense. Do I clean my guns after every firing? No many times I don't, but if I fire my everyday carry (EDC) handgun then I always try to clean it right away. Cleaning a gun is like many things in the firearm industry there are a million ways to do it. There is not just one correct way. Find a way that is easy for you and maintain your firearm so that it will work when you need it the most.
Do not go out and buy a cleaning kit......You will want to see what I recommend you get, and I will have some inexpensive cleaning items for sale during these events. October 14th and 15th, Wednesday and Thursday evenings at 6:30 pm in my classroom. If these dates do not work for you let me know what does and I will try to arrange something different.

OC/Pepper Spray Training

OC/Pepper Spray is legal everywhere in Colorado. It is one of the best ways we have to defend property and ourselves in non-deadly force situations. It also serves as a complement defensive tool for anyone that carries a handgun for self-defense. Remember if all you carry is a gun the legal system can say that you intend to use a gun as a solution for everything. Statistics indicate that most self-defense encounters would not qualify for use of a gun (your life is not in danger). Contact me direct for the best OC/Pepper Spray at wholesale prices.

Let me know if you would like to have this training. A few people missed it last month due to scheduling conflicts we will hold it in the evenings to make it work for your schedule
Class fee is $35

Conserve Your Ammo Training Drill

Many of you are not shooting because of the ammo shortage. Either you don't have any or your saving what you have. You can conserve ammo by getting a little creative. A practice session does not mean shooting hundreds of rounds. The last time we had one of the no ammo periods I would shoot 20 rounds at various distances and then shoot my .22 cal pistol after that. Here is an easy drill that doesn't take to much ammo.

You can download this free printable B8 target here
Then take the number of rounds you wish to practice with and separate them into 4 groups. Let's say you want to shoot 20 rounds. So you will shoot 5 rounds at each 3 yards (9'), 5 Yards (15'),7 yards (21'), and 10 yards (30'). All rounds should be in the black. Shoot each distance and repair the target with masking tape, or put up new targets at each distance. Another variation would be to not go to the next distance until you can keep them all in the black. There are many variations like timing yourself or drawing from the holster. Remember at the City Park Range you can only draw from a strong side holster. Contact me if you have any issues or concerns about this.

Ammo Shortage Revisited

This time the shortage seems to be worse because we got hit with the trifecta. Covid 19, the riots, and a Presidential election.
After you have been through a couple of these cycles you will learn some things about ammo. 1st, every time you see some ammo you should pick up a box or two. You will shoot it eventually or in a crisis like this one you will have ammo to practice with or ammo to trade for things like food and water. Ammo is always going to be an important commodity. 2nd, I think the prices are very high for what is available. I think the price will come back down and availability will increase. Remember we usually go through this when we have a Presidential Election. Don't pay those high prices you are seeing on the web. All you are doing is helping people take advantage of you and all the rest of us. The price will come down and you will be able to purchase ammo again at a reasonable price.
Steel and Aluminum cased ammo always surfaces during these times. I don't like to shoot it in my guns. Read the article below... It can be dirty and wear parts of your gun prematurely. Sometimes you have no choice. I'm also seeing dealers selling baggies of ammo and some of this is non-jacketed and can lead up your gun barrel. I'm not so sure that these aren't reloaded (be careful).
