The Virus

Everyone is staying close to home and trying to remain safe in the pandemic. The shooting range that we use in Pueblo Colorado is closed and probably will be until the end of the month. During this time you might think about practicing some dryfire routines. Right now ammunition is harder to come by but it is still available in some cases with no place to shoot it unless you have some land and can shoot on your own property. I am providing a dryfire routine below that you can easily use if you decide in the safety of your own home. I will notify you when the situation at the range changes and we can fire some real rounds at the targets. Please pay attention to the safety issues of dry fire practice laid out in the routine and modify them accordingly for your situation.

Renewal Concealed Carry Permits

The Pueblo County Sheriffs Dept is now taking permit renewals by mail. Call the appointment number and listen to the directions carefully. You are allowed to renew 120 days before the expiration 719-583-4941. As far as regular permit applications I think things are still the same. I am not sure how far out the sheriff's office is on appointments for new permits. If you find out let me know.

Dry Practice Safety Procedures

from Claude Werner Tactical Professor-

• Dry practice ONLY when you are alert and focused.
• Unload your pistol in an area other than the practice area - do not take any ammunition with you to the practice area.
• Go to your practice area where there is NO LIVE AMMUNITION.
• Check your pistol again to ensure that there is no ammunition in the pistol or any magazines you will use for practice.
• Use a chamber safety device. Even a pipe cleaner aka ‘craft fuzzy stick’ through the bore and bent over in the ejection port will do.
• Dry practice only on a specific dry practice target which is used only for dry practice. Do NOT dry practice at TVs, light switches, or other such non-specific targets; doing so is a dangerous practice that can lead to damage, injury, or death of someone else.
• Place your dry practice target against a bullet-resistant wall, e.g., brick or concrete block.
• If a bullet-resistant wall is not available, the target should be backed by a body armor panel capable of containing a bullet from your pistol.
• Do not allow yourself to be disturbed during dry practice.
• Wear eye protection when dry practicing in case of an Unintentional Discharge.
• If you use dummy ammunition during dry practice, use ONLY easily identifiable dummies. Homemade dummies should be color-coded to make them readily distinguishable from live ammunition. Commercial dummies are highly recommended. Non-distinguishable dummies can result in death or serious injury.
• When you are finished practicing, put your target and pistol away immediately and do some other action that will remove dry practice from your thoughts. Leave the chamber safety device in place until you have finished removing dry practice from your thoughts. Do NOT immediately reload your pistol after dry practice.
• Failure to follow these procedures EXACTLY can result in legal liability, property damage, serious injury, or DEATH.

Practice from a holster or a ready position its not about speed. It's about doing everything correctly so that you will build those neural pathways (muscle memory). Be sure that your gun can be dry fired without damage. Most .22 caliber guns should not be dry fired. In addition, check out this article it has some additional dry fire information as well as a video by Dave Spaulding which is great.

Student Download Page

In class, we talk about the resources of the password-protected downloads page that I have provided my students. I have been working on a new look and new resources for the page. I have been trying to make the information more accessible with categories and organization so it is easier to find what you are looking for. This information is available to my students and not the general public. Great information is available on the legal aspects of concealed carry, training issues, as well as some new information on self-protection coverage and more.

Pepper Spray Training

OC/Pepper Spray is legal everywhere in Colorado. It is one of the best ways we have to defend property in this state. It also serves as a complement defensive tool for anyone that carries a handgun for self-defense. Remember if all you carry is a gun the legal system can say that you intend to use a gun as a solution for everything. Statistics indicate that most self-defense encounters would not qualify for use of a gun (your life is not in danger). I have developed a booklet for the use of OC/Pepper Spray. Feel free to read it and discuss it with your family. Contact me direct for the best OC/Pepper Spray at wholesale prices.

Shooting at the Range

Heading into the winter months, remember that some events that happen at the range take priority. So be sure to check the events at Pueblo Municipal Shooters. When you park in the lot remember not to leave anything of value visible in your vehicle. Especially guns and gun cases. Also, be sure you are only firing guns that are authorized by the range rules. If you have any questions be sure to ask me about your firearms. In addition, always wear a hat for protection from flying brass and this time of year be sure to wear some warm clothes. The range can be cold at times.
