u.s.virtual training center

U.S. Virtual Training Center

Left the house about 7 am today and stopped at my favorite watering hole to pick up a coffee mocha to go. While I was waiting, I was reading an article about how RCBS  got started way back in the day and was thinking about how exciting it is to start a new business (been there done that “BTDT”) and the American entrepreneurial spirit that is still alive in our country today. My friends, Dennis Stroh and Jeff Grissom from Colorado Springs, are just those kind of entrepreneurs. Dennis called me and said, “We just got our virtual training simulator up and running in Colorado Springs, and we want you to come up and test it out.” I go back a long way with these guys, we all became certified firearms instructors with the NRA at the same time and have continued to train and communicate on many firearms matters over the years. I was a little nervous as this is the kind of training cops and military do all the time, but me, I’m a paper target guy. Sure I understand it all, and yes, I can shoot, but can I put it all together and not make a fool out of myself in the process? Got there in about 40 minutes as it’s right off I-25 and Circle and these guys were ready to rock.

Virtual Training here I come…….

I walked in, the staff knew I was coming, and I began reading through the normal paperwork and rules you would expect at any shooting facility. Dennis and I became Chief Range Safety Officers together and all this stuff was old hat. Dennis asked me to clear my carry weapon in the barrel provided, and we were off to a virtual training room. The place is laid out really nice, and they did a great job with the interior finish. As I walked into the virtual training room and Dennis shut the door behind us, I knew I was going to be in for a treat. Being a computer buff and web programmer, Dennis knew I wanted to see “the brain” so we looked at the scenarios and options before we started. The handguns are CO2 driven and have recoil from the operational slide. The laser hits the target, the screen sees it, and you can tell the computer whether or not to show you the hits. The people on the virtual training screen talk to you and you can talk back – with some options about the language they use just like movie ratings PG—-R if you get my drift. Anyone that knows me knows that PG was not my choice. I want this to be realistic and this dirtbag is not going to say “yes, sir and no, ma’am”.

We ran through a lot of scenarios such as armed robberies, bank robberies, domestic violence, and just plain malcontent zombies with weapons. The one time I really realized I did not know what I was doing was when I put 6 rounds center mass with not much effect and realized that the guy was wearing a vest so I finished him with a headshot. Between scenarios, Dennis was able to show me a video of my reactions and what I did during the scenario. At one point when I went over to the counter to chat, I could feel my heart pumping and I was breathing a little harder. Moving from cover to cover, loading, and talking to the bad guy all has to be coordinated. There are things you just don’t think about until you BTDT. I ran both pistols and shotguns and asked to try the revolver at one point. I am an old wheel gun guy from way back so I took a position and Dennis started the scenario. A dirtbag steps out with a full auto weapon and I say, SH#T, I’m outgunned.

Virtual Training saves Ears and AMMO

This is the most fun you can have with your clothes on and not worry about any lawsuits. Would I go back? You bet!! Would it have been today? You bet! This is great training for all and there are about 500 scenarios that can be run. Once you have done it, all your apprehension is gone. U.S. Virtual Training Center is the bomb! Anyone that wants to go let me know and I’ll set it up. The virtual training center is now out of business.

Colorado Concealed Carry

Right now  in our community and all over the nation there seems to be an increase in violent activity especially in the home. You and your family’s safety are at risk more now than ever before.  Many states have what is known as a castle doctrine, basically the right to protect your castle. In Colorado they call it the Make My Day Law. You have the right to protect yourself and your family from harm, and in that law you are given special protection from criminal and civil liability.  Please take the time to understand how to protect your family and have a plan of action so that your entire family knows what to do when the proverbial  S#!T hits the fan.

Rule #1…….don’t answer the door in the middle of the night….
Are you kidding me… I should not even have to say this.  People coming to your house late at night should call in advance and let someone know they are coming.

Rule #2…… the statute says uninvited entry….
Don’t help them out by letting them in.

Rule #3…..don’t ever go outside with a gun …..
Your protected under the statute in your home not on your front lawn or in your backyard

Rule#4….your garage is part of your home…….
If your garage is attached to your home it is part of your home. Let the Police handle that guy who is out in your garage. Remember if you confront someone and they decide not to comply with your commands you may have to shoot them.

Rule #5….shooting someone is always ugly…….
Remember that shooting someone always comes with consequences. Loss of employment, Loss of friends, time from work, loss of money from legal defense, and dealing with that fact that you had to do this to another human being.

assault rifle AK-47

Assault Rifle Definition

If anyone is interested here are some standard definitions for Assault Rifles. I think some people are calling our sporting weapons Assault Rifles
and maybe there is a definition problem?
definition of assault rifle at wikipedia

It must be an individual weapon with provision to fire from the shoulder(i.e. a buttstock);
It must be capable of selective fire;
It must have an intermediate-power cartridge: more power than a pistol butless than a standard rifle or battle rifle;
Its ammunition must be supplied from a detachable magazine rather than a feed-belt.
And it should at least have a firing range of 300 meters (1000 feet)
Rifles that meet most of these criteria, but not all, are technically not assault rifles despite frequently being considered as such. For example, semi-automatic-only rifles like the AR-15 (which the M16 rifle is based on) that share designs with assault rifles are not assault rifles, as they are not capable of switching to automatic fire and thus are not selective fire capable. Belt-fed weapons or rifles with fixed magazines are likewise not assault rifles because they do not have detachable box magazines.The term “assault rifle” is often more loosely used for commercial or political reasons to include other types of arms, particularly arms that fall under a strict definition of the battle rifle, or semi-automatic variant of military rifles such as AR-15s.The US Army defines assault rifles as “short, compact, selective-fire weapons that fire a cartridgeintermediate in power between submachine gun and rifle cartridges.”

Another definition of assault rifle at merriam-webster

Military firearm that is chambered for ammunition of reduced size or propellant charge and has the capacity to switch between semiautomatic andfully automatic fire. Light and portable, yet able to deliver a high volume of fire with reasonable accuracy at modern combat ranges of 1,000–1,600 ft (300–500 m), assault rifles have become the standard infantry weapon of modern armies. Their ease of handling makes them ideal for mobile assault troops crowded into personnel carriers or helicopters,as well as for guerrilla fighters engaged in jungle or urban warfare. Widely used assault rifles are the U.S. M16, the Soviet Kalashnikov (the AK-47 and modernized versions), the Belgian FAL and FNC, and the German G3.

colored circle gun training target

Don’t Put Off That Gun Training

You may have thought about getting some gun training this year because you feel that you need to have some education in the do’s and don’ts of concealed carry. Maybe you thought about getting some gun training about firearm safety because you feel uneasy about your gun and your ability to handle it safely. Sometimes what you need is just to take a local advanced gun training skills class and  get some new gun training ideas so that you have some new ideas about how to train.

Gun Training Can Be Serious Fun

Changing the way you train with new gun training ideas is one way you keep interested in your training routine. Be creative, take someone with you so you can have a training partner. One easy routine you and your partner can do is the “colored circle target”. Any version of this target works.  Load 5 rounds, start at the ready position, and have your partner call out the colors in random order. One shot at each color or letter. You can mix it up any way you want. You can also use different shapes i.e. (triangle,box,circle,numbers) and different size circles. Try running a shot timer.  Remember to keep your target low enough so that you are not shooting at the ceiling ( your RANGE SAFETY OFFICER will appreciate that). You can have a lot of serious gun training fun with these ideas.

Firearms Training in Pueblo, Colorado varies from instructor to instructor, but with NRA instruction your firearms training class should be structured by the NRA and these classes should be very similar from one class to another.
