Concealed Carry Restrictions

The License is for Concealed Carry

There are some confusing signs in the Pueblo area that restrict your right to carry a concealed weapon. Some of the signs are on public or county properties and they are very visible. The first one that we have all seen says The Open Carrying of Firearms Or Deadly Weapons Within This Building Is Prohibited”   this sign is straightforward. You can not carry a gun that is exposed (open carry) like the cowboys did in the old days in this building. Concealed Carry is fine but it has to be concealed. The Confusing part of this sign is when it shows up somewhere that you can’t carry at all, like the 10th judicial court building where they have metal detectors and sheriff officers guarding the entrance.

The next one is a little tricky and people have told me that is says something different than it actually does. “Bringing in concealed weapons that are not legally licensed and permitted, or openly displaying a weapon except by law enforcement officials is prohibited”  this sign has two parts separated by a comma. The first part says you can’t bring a concealed weapon in unless it is licensed or permitted. The second part says no open carry except by law enforcement. These type of  Concealed Carry restrictions or notices are common. The problem ensues when a person doesn’t read the entire sign and really dissect what the meaning or intent is from the sign.

Remember it is your responsibility as a licensed concealed carry individual to know and understand all the restricted areas that you encounter in your normal travels around town,  restrictions apply but are not limited to, the Jail, Post Office, Court, Schools, Airports,Public Transportation(Bus),Colorado State Fair Grounds, and any place that has a metal detector or a sign posted with some restrictions.

Pueblo City Ordinance 11-1-601

The Pueblo City Ordinance  11-1-601 is very clear on the subject. It defines all the things you should not do and then tells you what you can do. Things like knife blade lengths and stun guns are discussed. If you live in the Pueblo area you should read this ordinance so that you are informed.

Bank signs vary from location to location. One of the things that always comes up is the fact that no gun signs in Colorado have no force of law. What that means is that Colorado, unlike some other states, has some very weak language in their sign law.  So it has been said that in these locations all that can happen to you if caught with a firearm is to be asked to leave. If you refused you may be able to be charged with trespassing.  Timothy J. Priebe, Esq. an attorney in Colorado has written a paper called Should I Stay Or Should I Go where he discusses this issue. You should read and understand this document.

Bank Sign TexasThis sign is on one of the local banks in downtown Pueblo, Colorado it is totally bogus. This sign is the Texas Law 30-06 and these laws do not exist in Colorado. This bank just thinks most people will follow whatever sign they post or that gun owners are sheep.

As always none of this is legal advice. I advocate being informed and follow the law. To follow the law you must understand the difference between coffee table chat and knowledge. My class has new information in it all the time. If you are a concealed carry permit holder and you are up for renewal you would be wise to get some updated information so that you can make good decisions for you and your family.

This is a great reference book that everyone should have in their library.

assault rifle AK-47

Assault Rifle Definition

If anyone is interested here are some standard definitions for Assault Rifles. I think some people are calling our sporting weapons Assault Rifles
and maybe there is a definition problem?
definition of assault rifle at wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assault_rifle

It must be an individual weapon with provision to fire from the shoulder(i.e. a buttstock);
It must be capable of selective fire;
It must have an intermediate-power cartridge: more power than a pistol butless than a standard rifle or battle rifle;
Its ammunition must be supplied from a detachable magazine rather than a feed-belt.
And it should at least have a firing range of 300 meters (1000 feet)
Rifles that meet most of these criteria, but not all, are technically not assault rifles despite frequently being considered as such. For example, semi-automatic-only rifles like the AR-15 (which the M16 rifle is based on) that share designs with assault rifles are not assault rifles, as they are not capable of switching to automatic fire and thus are not selective fire capable. Belt-fed weapons or rifles with fixed magazines are likewise not assault rifles because they do not have detachable box magazines.The term “assault rifle” is often more loosely used for commercial or political reasons to include other types of arms, particularly arms that fall under a strict definition of the battle rifle, or semi-automatic variant of military rifles such as AR-15s.The US Army defines assault rifles as “short, compact, selective-fire weapons that fire a cartridgeintermediate in power between submachine gun and rifle cartridges.”

Another definition of assault rifle at merriam-webster

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/assault%20rifle

Military firearm that is chambered for ammunition of reduced size or propellant charge and has the capacity to switch between semiautomatic andfully automatic fire. Light and portable, yet able to deliver a high volume of fire with reasonable accuracy at modern combat ranges of 1,000–1,600 ft (300–500 m), assault rifles have become the standard infantry weapon of modern armies. Their ease of handling makes them ideal for mobile assault troops crowded into personnel carriers or helicopters,as well as for guerrilla fighters engaged in jungle or urban warfare. Widely used assault rifles are the U.S. M16, the Soviet Kalashnikov (the AK-47 and modernized versions), the Belgian FAL and FNC, and the German G3.

colored circle gun training target

Don’t Put Off That Gun Training

You may have thought about getting some gun training this year because you feel that you need to have some education in the do’s and don’ts of concealed carry. Maybe you thought about getting some gun training about firearm safety because you feel uneasy about your gun and your ability to handle it safely. Sometimes what you need is just to take a local advanced gun training skills class and  get some new gun training ideas so that you have some new ideas about how to train.

Gun Training Can Be Serious Fun

Changing the way you train with new gun training ideas is one way you keep interested in your training routine. Be creative, take someone with you so you can have a training partner. One easy routine you and your partner can do is the “colored circle target”. Any version of this target works.  Load 5 rounds, start at the ready position, and have your partner call out the colors in random order. One shot at each color or letter. You can mix it up any way you want. You can also use different shapes i.e. (triangle,box,circle,numbers) and different size circles. Try running a shot timer.  Remember to keep your target low enough so that you are not shooting at the ceiling ( your RANGE SAFETY OFFICER will appreciate that). You can have a lot of serious gun training fun with these ideas.

Gun Control SkillsAiming your handgun is one of the gun control skills you must acquire to be able to hit the target and of course protect yourself in a self protection encounter. Aiming your handgun is a basic part of gun control skills and its use,  also a very important safety aspect of handling a firearm i.e.,muzzle direction. The sights are located on top of the barrel of your handgun. The front sight needs to be level with the top of the rear sight. Many types of sights are available on firearms today but the all serve the same purpose, to align the barrel of your firearm with your target so you can hit what you are aiming at. No matter which variety of sights your firearm has, the key skill is to keep your eyes focused on the front sight while aligned with the rear sight. The target should be slightly blurred and you should be focused on your front sight.

Gun Control Skills-Trigger Control

No one, not even the very best shots can hold a gun perfectly still. Trigger control and sight alignment go hand in hand and are the shooters best gun control skills. Most misplaced shots are due to poor trigger control. Learn to take the slack out of your trigger and then press the trigger in a smooth action to break the shot. You will have more enjoyment from your shooting time when you are hitting the target.

Gun Control Skills

Remember the FBI report that says shot placement is more important when selecting a gun than caliber size.

Gun control skills will make you a better shot and give you greater self  protection.
