If the 3 rules of safety were always followed there would be no accidents with guns. Just take any accident report in the news or media and apply the 3 major rules and see if you can find a scenario where that is not true.
Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction
Always keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot
Always keep the gun unloaded until ready to use
If these rules were always followed there would be no gun accidents. Gun Safety is an attitude….you should have one.!!
I am putting together training class schedules for the 2011 season. Some people have expressed an interest in private lessons and I am putting a lesson plan together for that. Some have expressed an interest in a refresher course mostly how to keep and store a firearm safely in the home or automobile not necessarily interested in carrying concealed. I will be Training Firearm and Safety Training for Handguns of all types in Pueblo Colorado throughout the year. Sportsman or Individuals who are looking to become more comfortable with handling his or her firearm, in the home or automobile can benefit from this training.
Concealed Guns in vehicles is it legal? My hero Patrick Swayze said it best in the movie “Roadhouse”opinions varywell not really. You will hear a lot of opinions in the coffee shop so let’s look at the statutes to make it clear.
(3) (a) A person who may lawfully possess a handgun may carry a handgun under the following circumstances without obtaining a permit and the handgun shall not be considered concealed:
(I) The handgun is in the possession of a person who is in a private automobile or in some other private means of conveyance and who carries the handgun for a legal use, including self-defense; or
(II) The handgun is in the possession of a person who is legally engaged in hunting activities within the state.
(b) The provisions of this subsection (3) shall not be construed to authorize the carrying of a handgun in violation of the provisions of section 18-12-105 or 18-12-105.5.
33-6-125. Possession of a loaded firearm in a motor vehicle.
It is unlawful to possess any firearm, other than a pistol or revolver, in or on any motor vehicle unless the chamber of such firearm is unloaded. For the purposes of this section, a “muzzle-loader” shall be considered unloaded if it is not primed, and, for such purpose, “primed” means having a percussion cap on the nipple or flint in the striker and powder in the flash pan.
In Colorado, a person may carry a concealed firearm, regardless of a permit, while in a private automobile or other private conveyance, for lawful protection while traveling. Colorado law provides that local governments may not restrict a person’s ability to travel in a private automobile or other private conveyance while in possession of a firearm for hunting or lawful protection while traveling.
Colorado prohibits any person from possessing or having under his or her control any firearm other than a handgun in or on any motor vehicle unless the chamber of the firearm is unloaded.
Subject to limited exceptions, the state prohibits any person from operating or riding on any snowmobile with a firearm in his or her possession unless the firearm is unloaded and enclosed in a carrying case.
For more information on this question check out the state laws for firearms at Lexis Nexis. Don’t rely on partial or improper information. Be a responsible gun owner and be sure for yourself, or take some additional training. I have training sessions thru out the week.
One of the obligations we all have as concealed carry permit holders is to learn as much about the laws of our state that we can so that we are responsible gun owners. Remember it is your obligation to be informed. Pueblo Municipal Shooters, Inc sponsors a law and legal class for those who already have their CCW permit ,or those who are considering it. This training class is held about once a quarter and is a great place to get some great information about concealed carry and just good rules to follow for responsible gun owners. The Instructor for the class is Patrick Watts a retired law enforcement officer of many years. Usually held on Sunday afternoons, the class has a nominal fee of $15 which makes it a bargain seminar and all the proceeds go to the range. Class is Scheduled for February 27th. See my Training Calendar for more details. I highly recommend this class to everyone.
One of the important rules of safety in Gun Training for self defense or in just target shooting is to be sure of your target and what is beyond. You are responsible for the bullet from the time it leaves the gun until it comes to its final resting point. When plinking or target shooting a backstop is needed so that your bullet will not go beyond its intended destination, like at the indoor range, or outdoors where their is a large hill or mound of dirt called a berm. Most times when target shooting people use FMJ Full metal jacket ammo or ball ammo. This ammo has a lot of penetration great for target practice but maybe not so good for personal protection. The new personal protection rounds that are on the market now are for that personal protection scenario where what is beyond your target may be another person or a crowd of people. It could even be a wall to another room where children or family are sleeping. These bullets are designed not to over penetrate their destination by breaking up or distorting and loosing their energy after they hit the intended target. Here is a video showing these type of rounds in use
I recommend that you use standard personal protection ammo that police officers most often use. Federal Hydra Shok, Speer Gold Dot, or Federal HST
Talk to the experts at the gun shops about all these types of rounds. While they are more expensive than regular target ammo, these rounds definitely have there place in your arsenal for self protection.
Pueblo Colorado Concealed Carry Class is held several times during the week. The schedule is need-based and is subject to change all the time. This Pueblo Colorado Concealed Carry class is for beginners and experienced alike. It is my goal to provide the best education on a basis that works for people with busy schedules. Pueblo Colorado Concealed Carry Class has been held on weekday mornings and weekday evenings depending on the need. Almost every week a Saturday or Sunday option is available. Thursday and Friday are two days I do not have Pueblo Colorado Concealed Carry Classes available.
Class always includes a section on gun safety. Gun safety is paramount, especially since an individual is more likely to hurt themselves or another family member than they are to ever have a self-defense situation where they would defend themselves or their family with a gun.
Colorado Gun Laws and Use of Force
A section on this topic is always included so the individual understands the ins and outs of gun possession. These laws vary from state to state but most people spend the majority of their time in the state of Colorado so the need is for them to understand Colorado and its laws. The use of deadly force is a subject that can take a tremendous amount of time to learn all the nuances of these Colorado laws. I have taken the majority of these sections and boiled them down to understandable topics that you need to know to keep yourself and your family safe and out of trouble.
Some topics covered in this section:
The permit process Places you can legally carry concealed and open States that your permit is valid in Colorado 18-1-704 Use of physical force in defense of a person Colorado 18-1-704.5 Make My Day Elements of Self Defense AOJ Triad Tuller Drill Encounters with Law Enforcement Use of Force Scenario and Discussion
Guns and Gun Handling
I ask my students to bring a gun to the Pueblo Colorado Concealed Carry Class (with no ammunition of course). This is for people who already have a gun for concealed carry or own several guns and want to see if it is an appropriate selection for its intended use. All others I ask them not to buy a gun before class. I will teach the most important factors in choosing a gun and many of the aspects that go along with it. I will have plenty of guns in class so do not worry about not having a gun.
Some topics you will learn in this section:
Proper loading and unloading of Revolvers Proper loading and unloading of Semi-Auto Pistol proper names for the parts of a gun proper ammunition for practice and self-defense
Many other topics and discussions will be entered into in the Pueblo Colorado Concealed Carry Class. I also give one hour of shooting with each class, not always held on the same day. There is no additional charge for this on my part. You will have to pay range fees and bring your own ammunition.
