Colorado Concealed Carry Renewal TrainingThis year I’m seeing a big surge in Colorado concealed carry renewal training because I think people are finally realizing that they may not have gotten the training they needed to safely carry a concealed handgun when they first got their permits. If you have gone more than 5 years without some concealed carry renewal training you are kidding yourself. I am teaching material I have learned in the last year. Being an instructor is a commitment to training and being a student forever. Part-time instructors, gun show classes, hotel classes, and a class at the church may or may not have given you what you need to stay out of trouble and survive a deadly encounter.

Let’s face it the chances of you using your gun in self-defense are slim and none. Thank god Self Defense shootings are rare. Most shootings that you hear about are gang-related or involve the police or some criminal activity. The chances that you will injure yourself or someone else administratively mishandling your own gun is really high. Transporting your gun, loading and unloading that self-defense ammo because it’s expensive and you don’t want to waste it at the range. Cleaning your gun, and the big one drawing from the holster and then re-holstering and carrying a gun either improperly or in the wrong holster. These are all activities where accidents happen and concealed carry renewal training can help.

Concealed Carry Renewal Update is Important

Next, the level of understanding of the allowed use of deadly force amazes me. I had a conversation with a couple in a renewal class the other day. I was floored at the level of misinformation most concealed carry holders actually have. People believe they can do all kinds of things with their guns in and out of their homes that are not proper. Then there are the state gun laws that have not changed much in the 10 years I’ve been involved in this arena.

But there are places now in Colorado that have preempted Colorado State law and made up their own regulations. Guess what, you have to follow them and ignorance is not an excuse. Yes, there are lawsuits filed on these laws. These lawsuits will take years to figure it out and meanwhile, you are subject to these rules. I remember a time when the rules were the same everywhere in Colorado that made you confident about having a gun and knowing what was right and wrong throughout the state.

Do you know the Law

On top of all that traveling out of the state of Colorado with a gun in your car has gotten trickier and trickier. Do you carry insurance for this you should if you don’t?  Do these things sound important to you? Important enough to get someone to tell you the real scoop. Colorado Concealed Carry Renewal Training can help.

I’m not sure I want to rely on a class I had in the basement of some organization taught by a guy whos been a firearms instructor for 3 months. You are risking your freedom, your finances, and your life. When you don’t get the concealed carry renewal training and information you need to carry a concealed handgun safely in Colorado. Think about it. Are laws being passed or ignored all over this country? What about Immigration, what about Marijuana. Are laws and regulations being passed everywhere that someone says are illegal or not valid under the constitution either by the state or federal governments.

Colorado Concealed Carry Renewal Training

And last but probably the most important. Can you hit the target with your chosen handgun at what most people consider to be reasonable distances for self-defense? Will you safely access your gun and put shots on target under stress? Can you draw your handgun sitting down? Have you practiced shooting your gun at contact distances? Have you tried to practice pulling your firearm while in your car?  Most self-defense incidents happen within 10 feet. Are over in less than 3 seconds with 3 or fewer shots being fired. And usually happen frequently in and around automobiles.

Colorado Concealed Carry Renewal Training is easy to get it just takes approximately 2.5 hours and can be done on your schedule. Don’t listen to your friends at the coffee shop about when you can shoot someone it’s not their savings or freedom that’s at risk. Get scheduled for Colorado Concealed Carry Renewal Training today.

Dry Fire Training Is Important

Dry Fire Practice Target

Dry Fire Training is an easy way to practice your shooting skills without having to fire a shot. Remember safety is always paramount.

Here are some great Dry Fire training routines that I think you will enjoy. Download the target below and print it. This target is a great resource for dry firing. The target features 5 circles scaled to reflect an 8-inch target at different ranges when viewed from a distance of 4 yards (12 feet). There are circles for targets at 7, 10, 15, 20, and 25 yards. you can download the target here.

Dry Firing is Training

In your dry firing practice, you will always have some wobble (infinity symbol)infinity symbol firearm training.  Learn to break the shot as your gun sites pass through your target. Good grip and good stance are always important. As you can see in the video it is possible to practice every aspect of your self-defense shooting habits. Learn the different shooting positions and practice your draw stroke in many different situations. This dry fire training practice is essential to becoming that great gun handler you desire to be.

Dave Spaulding of Handgun Combatives was the 2010 LAW OFFICER TRAINER OF THE YEAR and he talks about ways that you can practice your skills outside of the range in the comfort of your home.

I think this target and these dry firing routines are the best I have come across and I am integrating this into my own gun training routine.

Remember I am a dealer for the SIRT Training Pistol and I would be glad to give you a quote for any model you would like to acquire.

Pueblo City Park Gun Range

Pueblo City Park Gun Range Shooting LanesPueblo City Park Gun Range 10 lane facility has a long history it has been at this location forShooting Range Rules over 50 years. Many members and non-members use the facility thru out the year. The gun range is primarily a handgun range some .22 cal rimfire rifles are allowed. In the handgun arena, no handguns bigger than a .44 mag are allowed and no handguns firing shotshells are permitted. That means a .50 Cal S&W is not allowed or a .454 Casull. But it can be confusing .45 ACP and .45 Long Colt are allowed. No rifles firing centerfire ammunition, so the 9mm carbines are off-limits, and any of the AR pistols are out. When in doubt don’t shoot.

The Pueblo City Park Gun Range is open to the public Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights Outdoor Picture Gun Rangefrom 7 pm-9 pm. There is a $10 fee for each shooter. Ear protection and eye protection are provided if you do not have your own. Targets are available for purchase and sometimes ammunition is available. The Pueblo City Park Gun Range will be manned on public nights by some of the finest RSO’s (NRA Range Safety Officers) volunteers. These people are there to see that the non-members abide by the rules and handle their firearms safely. Many of the volunteer staff was trained by me when I was the Chief Range Safety Officer for the range.

Become Certified as an NRA RANGE SAFETY OFFICER and help your range!!

The Pueblo City Park Gun Range is open to members 24-7 except when other events are scheduled (Board Meetings, Shooting events and Maintenance). No fee is charged when members shoot. Each person is responsible to clean up after themselves and leave the facility in better shape than they found it.

Pueblo City Park Gun Range Meeting Room

The Facilities

There is a nice big meeting room as you walk into the building at the Pueblo City Park Gun Range and this is where I have held many classes over the years. I have trained many students in that room and on the shooting range both for the range and my private classes. The Free Gun Safety Class that is required of all new members was developed and taught in that room by me when I was in charge of that program. However, most of the time I hold my firearms classes in my private classroom downtown but, sometimes a bigger place is nice with room for many people. In addition as a Certified Instructor with my credentials in place at the range, I also have the availability to use the facilities when the need arises.

Find The Range

To find the Pueblo City Park Gun Range From Interstate 25, take US Hwy. 50 West to Pueblo Blvd. Head South on PuebloPueblo City Park Gun Range Zoo Parking Lot Blvd. to Goodnight Ave. Turn Left at Goodnight Ave. and head into Pueblo City Park. Drive through the park to the Pueblo Zoo parking lot. The Range building is 50 feet North of the Zoo entrance. If coming from the south turn right on Goodnight and follow directions through the park.

As always I am available for training in a scheduled class or privately. I teach Colorado Concealed Carry Classes regularly as well as teaching people how to handle their guns safely and shoot.

Self DefenseOne of the concepts I stress to my classes is that having a sound self-defense strategy is a must. This sound self-defense strategy should include but is not limited to a good understanding of how your self-defense firearm works. This means being very familiar with all the functions of your gun (manual of arms). I can’t tell you how many times I have asked a student to pick a gun up and show me that it’s safe and unloaded and they struggle with the functions of their own gun. Like not knowing that on the firearm they own the slide can’t be moved with the safety on! Good gun handling and gun safety are skills I teach many people and hopefully, when they go home they practice these skills so that they become a good safe gun handler.

Awareness is an important part of the equation. If you do not know what’s happening around you how will you try to avoid it or deal with it? Avoidance is a great tool and may save your life and the lives of others who you are responsible for. I’m not talking about paranoia I’m talking about being alert (color codes of awareness).

The next step is marksmanship and a smooth, safe presentation of the gun. Most people in the industry agree that you should strive to be somewhere below 1.5 seconds on a smooth presentation and be able to put shots on target. Draw from the holster takes practice and to do it correctly and safely takes some good form (how to draw from the holster). Marksmanship is a skill that must be practiced. You should be able to consistently put shots on an 8-inch circle at 21 feet. Dry firing can help you to gain both of these skills and you should have a short and frequent practice session with your concealed carry firearm. Remember that with practice you gain speed from being smooth and you gain confidence from the repetition of doing it right. many encounters in self-defense happen in less than 10ft. 1.5 seconds in this arena will probably be a bad day for you and your family. Reaction never beats action. If someone has a firearm pointed at you you’re not going to be able to outdraw them.

Then comes the legal strategy. You have to drive the narrative (the story). Being a fan of Andrew Branca I have learned a few basic concepts of the laws of self-defense. two things that come to mind is that the 5 elements of self-defense should be understood and you should read as much as you can about these 5 elements (from Andrew’s Book) and from articles that are written by industry leaders. The next thing is to have an idea of how you are going to deal with the 911 call and the first responders at the scene. Andrew has an approach which he thinks is optimal but he states on many occasions that in the heat of the moment people might get lost in what to do or say. Many times when people are put under severe pressure or stress they forget what to do or say. That’s why just like in gun training you need to train yourself in these concepts so they are a habit. Make it how you think, it’s who you are, because you understand the concepts and why they are important to your sound self-defense strategy.

So here they are. Are you weak in any of these areas if so take a section and work on it? The fortunate thing is that self-defense shootings are rare. This means you likely will have time to get better. Don’t be complacent get a strategy to work on your areas of weakness.

Manual Of Arms
Awareness
Presentation Of The Firearm
Marksmanship
Legal Strategy

Do you understand these concepts? If not do some homework and figure out how they apply to your self-defense strategy. These are terms that intertwine the legal strategy and are important concepts to understand. Be careful of your sources, there are many who do not understand these concepts, and internet information can be slanted. I have information on all these topics. Let me know and I can supply it for you or direct you to a good source.

Make My DayColorado’s Make My Day Law

The left is starting to feel the push back and they do not like it nor know how to handle it. The coming years will be very interesting indeed and more violence and problems are bound to follow. Everyone should learn the basic dos and don’ts of self-defense. Both learn how to use firearms safely and to use your brain to follow the law and be sure that you can justify everything you do based on good common sense fundamentals that our industry teaches.

Be careful with online statements

I see comments and posts every day where people make statements like “I’ll shoot anyone who enters my home”. Do you think for one moment that if you have an event like this happen in your home that the investigators aren’t going to look up everything you have ever said online?? Be smart, learn to say things in a way that make you the good guy or gal. A better way to express that a man’s castle is his home might be to say that “if my life or my family’s life is ever threatened in my home I will do what it takes to protect them”.

This is a statement that you can defend. Be smart follow the law. Understand how to word your statements or comments so that you are the good guy or gal. Many people including police officers do not understand the “make my day law” in Colorado. Make sure you do and you will save yourself and your family a lot of agony.

A discussion of the “make my day law” and its pitfalls are in every concealed handgun class that I teach. I can also direct you to seminars held by attorneys happening around Colorado that you might like to attend. Andrew Branca is one such attorney and his very popular book is a great resource to have.
